Left Right Christmas Game: 3 Stories to Read Aloud

Everyone sits in a circle holding a wrapped gift. One person reads a story, and every time they say “left” or “right”, everyone passes their gift that way. When the story ends, you keep whatever you’re holding. Here are three original stories written for the game: one for families, one for the office party and one for kids. Read from your phone line by line, or print them.

Left Right Christmas Game

The Wright Family’s Very Late Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, the WRIGHT family woke up late. Mom WRIGHT looked at the clock and said, “We have to leave for Grandma’s RIGHT now!” Dad WRIGHT jumped out of bed and put his LEFT sock on his RIGHT foot.

Little Sam WRIGHT ran down the hall, turned LEFT into the bathroom and RIGHT back out again. He had LEFT his toothbrush in the car since last summer.

Grandpa WRIGHT, who was staying with them, said, “Don’t rush me, I’m not done with my coffee.” He took one sip with his RIGHT hand, set the mug down on his LEFT and LEFT it there for the rest of the day.

At last everyone was in the car. “Did we leave anything behind?” asked Mom WRIGHT. “Only the presents,” said Sam. Dad turned RIGHT, then LEFT, then RIGHT again, back into the driveway. The presents were sitting RIGHT by the front door, exactly where they had been LEFT.

Back on the road, Dad was sure the shortcut was to the LEFT. Mom was sure it was to the RIGHT. They argued until there was no road LEFT, only a farm with a very surprised cow on the RIGHT.

Sam pointed LEFT. “Look, Grandma’s lights!” They had been one street away from Grandma WRIGHT’s house the whole time.

Grandma WRIGHT opened the door and said, “You’re RIGHT on time. Everyone else LEFT the turkey in too long, so dinner is still an hour away.” The Wrights laughed, LEFT their coats in a pile and sat RIGHT down by the fire.

And that was the RIGHT way to start Christmas: late, a little lost and all together. Now pass your gift one last time to the LEFT, and keep whatever you’re holding RIGHT now!

How it works

  1. 1 Everyone brings a wrapped gift and sits in a circle holding it.
  2. 2 Pick a reader and choose a story: Family, Office party or Kids.
  3. 3 Every time the reader says LEFT or RIGHT (and “Wright”!), everyone passes their gift that way.
  4. 4 When the story ends, everyone keeps the gift in their hands. Open them together.

Tips for the reader

  • → Read slowly and pause a beat after each LEFT and RIGHT, so the gifts can keep up.
  • → Use “Read it aloud, line by line” for big text on your phone, one part at a time.
  • → The Wright family story is a trap: the name “Wright” counts as a pass too.
  • → For a bigger group, ask everyone to bring a gift of about the same value.
  • → Playing with small kids? Let them shout “left!” or “right!” along with you.
