White Elephant Rules: How the Gift Exchange Works

In a white elephant gift exchange everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. Number 1 opens a gift, and every player after that either opens a new gift or steals one that’s already open. A gift can usually be stolen three times before it’s frozen, and number 1 gets a final chance to swap at the end. Below are the full rules, the usual house rules on stealing, and variations like the dice game.

White Elephant Rules: How the Gift Exchange Works

White elephant (also called Yankee swap, dirty Santa or a Chinese gift exchange) works for 6 people or 40. You need one wrapped gift per person, a spending limit and a way to decide the order. Our white elephant number generator handles that last part on one phone.

How to play white elephant

  1. Agree on a budget and tell everyone to bring one wrapped gift that anyone could use.
  2. Put all the gifts in the middle of the room.
  3. Everyone draws a number. That’s the order you play in.
  4. Number 1 picks a gift from the pile, opens it and shows everyone.
  5. Number 2 either opens a new gift or steals number 1’s gift.
  6. If your gift gets stolen, you choose again: open a new gift or steal someone else’s.
  7. Keep going in number order until every gift has been opened.
  8. Number 1, who never got a chance to steal, gets one final turn to swap with anyone.

Stealing rules most groups use

  1. A gift can be stolen three times. After the third steal it’s frozen.
  2. No immediate steal-backs: you can’t take back the gift that was just taken from you.
  3. One steal per turn. A stolen-from player picks again, but the chain stops at the next new gift.
  4. Opened gifts stay in plain view so everyone knows what’s up for grabs.
  5. The final swap for number 1 can’t take a frozen gift, if you want to be strict.
  6. Write the steal count on a sticky note on each gift so nobody argues later.

White elephant variations

  1. White elephant dice game: roll a die on your turn. 1 means swap with the left, 6 means open a gift, and so on.
  2. Left-right story: someone reads a story, and gifts move left or right every time the words come up.
  3. Theme exchange: every gift has to fit a theme, like “something red” or “under $10 and edible”.
  4. Re-gift edition: bring something you already own and never use.
  5. Timed rounds: set a 15-minute timer, then everyone keeps what they hold when it rings.
  6. Book swap: everyone brings a wrapped book they loved, with a note inside.
  7. Mystery round: gifts stay wrapped until the very end, so people steal by shape and size.

Tips for a smoother game

  1. Set a budget everyone can manage. Ten to twenty-five is common.
  2. Ban gag gifts or allow them, but tell everyone before they shop.
  3. Keep the group under 25 or split into two games; long games drag.
  4. Wrap gifts in plain paper so nobody guesses who brought what.
  5. Have a few spare gifts in case someone forgets theirs.
  6. Play in a circle so everyone can see every opened gift.

Questions

How does white elephant work? +

Everyone brings a wrapped gift and draws a number. In number order, each person either unwraps a new gift from the pile or steals an opened one. Someone whose gift is stolen picks again: open a new one or steal a different gift. The game ends when every gift is open.

How many times can a gift be stolen in white elephant? +

Most groups say three times. After the third steal the gift is frozen and stays with whoever has it. Agree on the number before you start.

Can you steal back a gift that was just stolen from you? +

Usually not straight away. The common rule is no immediate steal-backs: you have to choose a different gift or open a new one, and you can try again on a later turn.

What’s the difference between white elephant and Secret Santa? +

In Secret Santa each person buys for one specific person they drew. In white elephant gifts are anonymous, nobody knows who gets what, and stealing is part of the game.
