How to Play Wavelength: Rules, Scoring and Variations
In Wavelength, one player secretly sees a target on a dial between two opposites, like Cold – Hot, and gives a single clue. Their team turns the dial to where they think the clue belongs, and scores more points the closer they get. In the board game two teams race to 10 points; with two players you play cooperatively instead. Below are the full rules, scoring, a worked example round and ways to play without the board, including a free Wavelength-style dial on this page.

How to play Wavelength in 4 steps
Wavelength is a guessing game for 2 or more players. One player knows where a hidden target sits between two opposites, gives a single clue, and the team tries to point the dial at exactly that spot.
-
1 Draw a card
Pick a card with two opposite ends, like Cold ↔ Hot.
-
2 See the target
Only the clue giver looks at where the hidden target sits on the dial.
-
3 Give a clue
They say one word or phrase that belongs at that spot, like “bath water”.
-
4 Turn the dial
The team moves the needle to where the clue belongs. The closer to the target, the more points.
What you need
The Wavelength board game, designed by Alex Hague, Justin Vickers and Wolfgang Warsch, comes with a dial, a screen that hides the target, and a deck of spectrum cards. You can also play with paper, or with a Wavelength-style game on one phone like the free dial above. Either way you need:
- A spectrum card with two opposite ends, like Underrated – Overrated. (Need ideas? See our 200+ Wavelength categories.)
- A hidden target somewhere on the scale between those ends.
- A clue giver (the “psychic” in the board game) and everyone else guessing.
How a round works
- The clue giver draws a spectrum card, for example Bad movie – Good movie.
- With nobody else looking, they spin or reveal the target. Say it lands a bit right of center, so the target is “a slightly better than average movie”.
- They give one clue that they think belongs exactly there. Something like “the third Spider-Man film” works; a clue like “a fine movie” is against the spirit of the game.
- Their team discusses where that clue sits and turns the dial. Everyone can talk, but the clue giver stays quiet.
- In the board game, the other team now guesses whether the real target is to the left or right of the dial.
- Reveal the target and score.
Scoring in the board game
- The target is a stripe of bands. The center band is worth 4 points, the bands on either side 3, and the outer bands 2. Missing the target entirely scores nothing.
- The other team scores 1 point if their left/right guess is correct.
- Teams take turns, and the first team to 10 points wins.
- Catch-up rule: if a team hits the 4-point center and is still behind, they get another turn straight away.
Scoring in Same Wave and the free dial
Same Wave, the Wavelength-style game in the Duoo app, is cooperative so it works on one phone and for two players. Everyone plays as one team for seven rounds. The center band is worth 3 points, the next bands 2, the outer bands 1, so the best possible score is 21. There’s no left/right guess. The free version at the top of this page uses the same rules.
How to play Wavelength with 2 players
- Pick a number of rounds, seven is a good length.
- One of you is the clue giver, the other turns the dial. Swap every round.
- Skip the left/right guess.
- Add up your points and try to beat your best score next time.
It’s a surprisingly good couples game: you find out quickly whether you think a “decent” first date means the same thing.
How to play without the board
Short version below. For every option side by side, including a DIY paper-plate board and a free printable template, see how to play Wavelength at home.
- Paper version: draw a large half circle, mark the target with a pencil while the others look away, cover it with a folded flap and let the guessers draw a line for their guess. Then lift the flap.
- Phone version: play the free Wavelength-style dial on this page. It hides the target, gives you spectrum cards and scores each round.
- App: Same Wave in the Duoo app has more than 300 spectrum cards in nine categories and works offline.
Tips for clue givers
- Pick clues everyone in the room knows. A niche reference only you get is a wasted turn.
- For targets near the middle, choose something people genuinely disagree about.
- Near the ends, start from an obvious extreme and nudge it: “a pretty good haircut” rather than “the best haircut ever”.
- Say your clue once. Explaining it is the fastest way to ruin the round.
Tips for guessers
- Talk it out loud. Hearing how others read the clue usually moves the dial the right way.
- Think about the clue giver, not just the clue. What do they think is overrated?
- If you’re torn between two spots, the middle of them is a safe bet for the outer bands.

Questions
How do you play Wavelength? +
One player draws a card with two opposites, like Cold and Hot, and secretly sees a target somewhere on a dial between them. They give one clue that fits that spot, such as "bath water". Their team turns the dial to where they think the clue belongs and scores 2 to 4 points if they land on the target, more the closer they are.
How many players do you need for Wavelength? +
The board game is usually played with 4 or more people split into two teams, but it works with two or three players if you play cooperatively and try to beat your own score.
How do you score in Wavelength? +
In the board game the target has a center band worth 4 points, with 3-point and 2-point bands on each side. The other team can also guess whether the target is left or right of the dial for 1 point. In the Same Wave app and the free dial on this page, the bands are worth 3, 2 and 1 points.
Can you play Wavelength with 2 players? +
Yes. Take turns giving the clue and turning the dial, skip the left/right guess, and add up your points over a set number of rounds. Same Wave plays exactly this way over seven rounds, with a maximum of 21 points.
Can you play Wavelength without the board? +
Yes. Draw a half circle on paper and use a folded flap as the screen, or play a Wavelength-style dial on a phone. The free one on this page hides the target, lets you drag the needle and keeps score.
