How to pick imposter words for your group
The secret word decides whether a round is fun or falls flat. Three rules of thumb:
- Everyone must know it. If one player hasn’t heard of the word, they effectively become a second imposter.
- It needs lots of possible clues. “Pizza” works (cheese, slice, Italy, delivery, oven…). “Paperclip” barely does.
- Match the room. Brands and TV shows are great with friends your age, food and animals are safer with family.
The hint in brackets is what the imposter sees: related, but not a giveaway.

Imposter game words for kids
Stick to things children see every day, with hints they can say quickly: Banana (Yellow), Puppy (Bark), Playground (Swing), Birthday (Cake), Dinosaur (Roar), Rainbow (Colors), School bus (Yellow), Ice cream (Cold), Football (Goal), Swimming pool (Splash). Skip abstract words like Karma or Inflation.
Tips for writing your own words
- Write the hint first. If you can’t think of a one-word hint that’s related but not obvious, the word is probably too narrow.
- Test the “first clue” problem. Imagine the first player’s most likely clue. If it gives the word away instantly (“Eiffel” for Paris), pick a less obvious word or let a confident player start.
- Mix categories during the evening. Three food rounds in a row get predictable; alternate with places and pop culture.

Questions
What makes a good imposter game word? +
A good word is something everyone in the group knows, with many possible one-word clues. Concrete nouns like Pizza, Beach or Netflix work best. Avoid words that are too niche or that only have one obvious association.
What is the hint in the imposter game? +
The hint is a single word the imposter gets instead of the secret word. It is loosely related, for example “Sand” for Beach, so the imposter has a chance to blend in without knowing the exact word.
How many words do you need for a game night? +
Each round uses one word, and a round takes 3–5 minutes. For an evening, 20–30 words is plenty. Pick them from different categories so the rounds feel different.
Can you use custom words in the imposter game? +
Yes. Write your own list on paper or in your notes, one word and one hint per line, and draw from it at random. Inside jokes, names of friends and places your group knows make the best custom words, as long as everyone knows them.
