How to do a year in review
You don’t need a planner or a template. Pick the format that fits the people you are with:
- On your own. Set a timer for 20 minutes, pick six questions from the first list and write the answers down. Scroll through your camera roll first; photos bring back months you’ve already forgotten.
- As a couple. Make it a date. Go to a favorite restaurant or cook at home, take turns asking questions and save the “looking ahead” ones for dessert. There is a full list of end of year questions for couples if you want more.
- With friends. Draw questions at dinner, hand out the 2026 awards below, or drop one question a day into the group chat during the last week of December.

Make it a game
The lists above work on their own, but a game keeps the conversation going without anyone having to play host.
Draw and answer. Write ten to twenty questions on slips of paper and put them in a bowl or a glass. Take turns drawing one; the person who draws answers first, then everyone else. Each player gets one pass.
Guess who wrote it. Everyone writes an anonymous answer to the same question, like “best day of the year”, and the group guesses who wrote which. It works best with old friends.
Year in Review in the Duoo app. Duoo, an iPhone and iPad app with party games for two to eight players, has a Year in Review game with cards in five categories: Us, Friends, Deep, Spicy and Looking Ahead. It runs offline on one phone, so you can pass it around the table. The free card game at the top of this page uses a sample of those cards.
For the night itself, see our New Year’s Eve questions, New Year’s Eve party games, New Year’s Eve games for couples and the New Year’s Eve bingo cards.
Save these lists for later
Screenshot them for game night or save them to Pinterest.
Questions
What are good year in review questions? +
The best ones point at a single moment: "What was the best day of your year?", "Which decision are you glad you made?" or "What surprised you most about yourself?" They are easier to answer than "How was your year?" and lead to actual stories.
What questions should I ask myself at the end of the year? +
Ask what went well, what you learned, what you want to stop doing and what you want more of. A short set works better than a long one: pick five or six questions from the "ask yourself" list below and write your answers down.
How do you do a year in review with friends? +
Turn it into a game. Take turns drawing a question, give out funny "2026 awards" to people in the room, or answer one question each in the group chat every day of the last week of December.
When should you do a year in review? +
Any time in the last two weeks of December works, and New Year's Eve is the classic. Some people prefer the first quiet weekend of January, when the holidays are over and the year still feels close.
