How to plan games for New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is a long party with a fixed ending. That means you want lighter games early, a couple of bigger group games in the middle, and something quick and loud for the last few minutes. The 20 games below are sorted that way: adult games, family games, countdown games, and optional drinking versions.

New Year’s Eve party games for adults

1. New Year Imposter

Players: 3–8. Everyone gets the same New Year word except the imposter, who only sees a vague hint. Each player says one word about the secret word, then the group votes on who’s bluffing. Use the free game at the top of this page, or try these words (imposter hint in brackets):

2. New Year’s Would You Rather

Players: 2 or more. Everyone picks a side, and the minority defends their choice.

  • Would you rather spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square or at home in pajamas?
  • Would you rather keep one resolution all year or break every resolution by January 3?
  • Would you rather relive your best day of this year or skip your worst one?
  • Would you rather be asleep before midnight or be the last person awake at 4 a.m.?
  • Would you rather get a perfectly planned year or a year full of surprises?
  • Would you rather watch fireworks from a rooftop or from a boat?

Make up your own or mix in classic questions as the night goes on.

3. New Year’s Never Have I Ever

Players: 3 or more. Say a statement; anyone who has done it shares the story (or takes a sip, in the drinking version below).

  • Never have I ever kept a New Year’s resolution for the whole year.
  • Never have I ever fallen asleep before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
  • Never have I ever written the wrong year on something in January.
  • Never have I ever made a resolution I knew I’d break.
  • Never have I ever missed the countdown because I was in the bathroom.
  • Never have I ever spent New Year’s Eve somewhere I didn’t want to be.

Add your own about the group’s year for extra laughs.

4. New Year’s Who’s Most Likely To

Players: 4 or more. Read the prompt, count to three, and everyone points.

  • Who’s most likely to break their resolution first?
  • Who’s most likely to fall asleep before midnight?
  • Who’s most likely to cry during Auld Lang Syne?
  • Who’s most likely to start the countdown at the wrong time?
  • Who’s most likely to have the most exciting year ahead?
  • Who’s most likely to text their ex at 12:01?

Majority vote decides, and the “winner” has to explain themselves.

5. Resolution Guessing Game

Players: 5 or more. Everyone writes one resolution on a slip of paper, anonymously. Mix them in a bowl, read them out one by one, and the group guesses whose each is. Funny fake resolutions are allowed, but each person should add one real one.

6. Two Truths and a Lie: Year Edition

Players: 4 or more. Each player shares three things that happened to them this year, one made up. It doubles as a catch-up for friends who haven’t seen each other in a while.

7. New Year’s Taboo

Players: 4 or more, in teams. Describe New Year words without the forbidden ones. Write a few cards before the party:

  • Resolution: goal, promise, January, gym, break
  • Fireworks: sky, bang, colors, explode, midnight
  • Champagne: bubbles, drink, toast, pop, bottle
  • Countdown: ten, numbers, midnight, clock, seconds

For more cards, see our taboo words list.

8. Best of the Year Awards

Players: Any number. Before midnight, the group nominates and votes on awards for each other’s year: best glow-up, best trip, most chaotic moment, best new hobby. Hand out paper certificates or just applause.

9. Hourly Balloon Countdown

Players: Any number. Inflate one balloon for each hour until midnight (or until the kids’ bedtime) and put a slip of paper inside each with an activity: a dance party, a joke contest, a snack break, a game of charades. Pop one every hour on the hour.

10. Family Time Capsule

Players: Any number. Everyone writes down their favorite memory of the year, their current favorite song and food, and one hope for next year. Seal it in an envelope labeled with next New Year’s Eve and open it then.

11. New Year Charades

Players: 4 or more, in teams. Act out New Year’s things without talking: popping champagne, watching fireworks, keeping a resolution, the ball drop, singing at midnight. It works for every age.

12. Predictions for Next Year

Players: 3 or more. Everyone writes predictions about the family for the year ahead: who’ll learn a new skill, where you’ll go on vacation, who’ll grow the most. Save them with the time capsule and see who was right.

13. New Year Who Am I

Players: 2 or more. Write New Year-themed characters and things on sticky notes (Father Time, Baby New Year, a firework, a party hat) and stick one on each player’s forehead. Players ask yes-or-no questions to figure out who or what they are. The phone version is on the Who Am I page.

14. Early Midnight Countdown

Players: Any number. For younger kids, do a full countdown with noisemakers and confetti at an earlier hour. They get the celebration, and the adults get a quieter real midnight.

15. Minute to Win It Challenges

Players: 2 or more. Short timed challenges in the final hour: stack ten cups into a pyramid, move cotton balls between bowls with a spoon in your mouth, or keep a balloon in the air without hands. One challenge every ten minutes builds up to midnight.

16. Countdown Categories

Players: 3 or more. Name a category, like things that sparkle or reasons to celebrate, and go around the circle. Each player gets ten seconds to answer. Hesitate or repeat and you’re out.

17. Highlight Toasts

Players: Any number. In the last 15 minutes, go around the room and have each person share one highlight of their year in a sentence. It’s a warm, simple way to bring everyone together before the countdown.

18. Twelve Grapes

Players: Any number. A tradition from Spain: eat one grape for each of the twelve strokes of midnight for good luck in each month of the new year. Use small seedless grapes and keep it as a fun challenge rather than a race.

New Year’s Eve drinking games (optional)

Drinking is never required. Every game here works just as well with sparkling juice or soda, and small sips are plenty. Keep water and food out, and make sure everyone has a safe ride home.

19. Resolution Never Have I Ever

Players: 3 or more, adults. Play the New Year’s Never Have I Ever prompts above; anyone who has done it takes a small sip of whatever they’re drinking.

20. Ball Drop Bingo

Players: 3 or more, adults. If you’re watching a New Year’s broadcast, make bingo cards with things that might happen: a host mispronounces a name, someone in the crowd proposes, a performer forgets a lyric, the camera shows confetti. Mark a square when it happens and take a sip, or skip the drinks and just play for the win.
