How to play Who Am I
- Everyone gets a secret identity they can’t see: on a sticky note, a card in a headband or a phone held to their forehead.
- Take turns trying to work out who you are. Depending on the version, you ask yes-or-no questions or your friends give you clues.
- Guess correctly and you score. In the timed version, guess as many as you can before the clock runs out.
Starting out? Ask big questions first: “Am I a real person?”, “Am I alive?”, “Am I from a movie?” Every yes or no cuts the list in half.

Four ways to play Who Am I
Sticky notes. Everyone writes a name and sticks it on their neighbor’s forehead. Go around the circle asking yes-or-no questions about yourself, one per turn. If the answer is yes, ask again. Works for 3 to 10 players and needs nothing but paper.
Forehead phone. One player holds a phone to their forehead with the word facing out. Everyone else gives clues, acts it out or hums it, without saying the word. Tilt down for correct, up to pass, and count how many you get in 60 seconds. The free game at the top of this page plays this way.
Twenty questions. You get twenty yes-or-no questions to find your identity. Use them all without guessing right and the person who picked your name wins the round. Good for car rides because nobody needs to see anything.
For two people. Each of you secretly sees the other’s identity, then you take turns asking one yes-or-no question each. First to buzz in with the right answer wins. This is the version in the Duoo app.
Who Am I questions to ask
In the yes-or-no version you only get answers to questions that can be answered with yes or no. Work from wide to narrow:
- Am I a real person? Am I alive today?
- Am I a man, a woman, an animal or a thing?
- Am I in a movie, a TV show, a book or a game?
- Am I famous for singing, acting, sports or something else?
- Am I American? Am I older than 40?
- Would I be found in a kitchen, outdoors or at a school?
- Do I have a catchphrase, a pet or a famous outfit?
Save your guess for when you have three or four yes answers in a row. A wrong guess usually costs you a turn.
Who Am I for seniors and bridal showers
For older groups, pick people they grew up with: classic film stars, musicians, presidents, TV hosts and well-known brands. Reading the names on large cards helps. At a bridal shower, use celebrity couples, movie weddings and rom-com characters, and pin the names on guests’ backs so they can ask the room.
Tips for picking characters
- Match the room. A name only one person knows makes a dead round.
- Mix easy and hard. Two or three gimmes per round keep everyone in the game.
- Real people, fictional characters and things play differently. Mixing them makes the first questions (“Am I real?”) useful.
- For kids, things they can act out (animals, jobs, a robot) work better than names.
