How to Play Pictionary: Rules, Word Lists and Ways to Play Without the Board

In Pictionary, one player draws a word while their team guesses it. No letters, numbers or talking are allowed. The board game uses a path, word categories and a timer, but you can play a Pictionary-style game with just paper, a pen and a free word generator. It works for 2 players, small groups or two teams. This guide gives the rules, simple scoring, and versions for pairs, adults, video calls and a no-skill drawing challenge.

The rules

Players: 2 or more, best with 4 to 10 in two teams. Time: 30 to 60 minutes. Needs: paper or a whiteboard, pens, a timer, words.

Split into two teams. The team generator is the quick way.
First drawer. One player is the drawer and sees the word. Nobody else does.
Start the timer. 60 seconds is standard.
Draw. No letters, no numbers, no speaking, no mouthing, no gestures at objects in the room.
Guess. The drawer’s team shouts guesses. The drawer can nod or shake their head, nothing more.
Score. Correct in time: the team scores a point. Otherwise nobody does.
Win. Alternate teams and play a fixed number of rounds. The highest score wins.

Tip: allow “close” guesses only if the drawer says so. Arguments about “bike” and “bicycle” are a waste of the clock.

Scoring options

Simple: 1 point per word.
Fast bonus: 2 points if guessed in under 20 seconds.
Steal: if the drawer’s team fails, the other team gets one guess for a point.
Difficulty: easy words 1, hard words 3. Decide before you draw the word.

1. Buy the board game

Pictionary is a trademark of Mattel and the board game has a track, a die, a timer and word cards across categories. Buy it if you want the official board and an easel. The word categories and the board rules are part of what you pay for. Duoo is not affiliated with Mattel.

2. Make it yourself

The Pictionary-style version is just paper and pens.

3. Play on Duoo

Duoo does not have a drawing game, so we will not pretend otherwise. The free Pictionary word generator is our Pictionary-style option. Variations

With 2 players. Alternate drawing. Each person gets 10 words, with 60 seconds each. The higher score wins. For a more relaxed version, have no timer and only draw for the fun of it.

With 3 people. Two guess, one draws. Rotate every word. Add a point for the drawer if they are guessed, so everyone is rewarded for clear drawing.

In teams. Standard format. Let both teams guess at once (“all play”) on a hard word to keep the other team involved.

Adults and party. Use spicy words, add a wine or drink penalty to the losing team, or give the drawer a handicap like drawing with the other hand.

Video call. Use a shared whiteboard, or share your screen with a drawing app. The host sends the word by private message. Guess in chat, or by speaking.

Blind Pictionary. The drawer closes their eyes or wears a blindfold. Nobody gets points for neatness.

One-line challenge. The drawer cannot lift the pen.

Tips

Draw the category first, then the details. A box with legs gets you to “table” or “dog” faster.
Use arrows and speech bubbles carefully. Words in bubbles break the rules.
Guessers: shout everything. Silence helps nobody.
