How to Play Wavelength at Home: 4 Ways, From the Board Game to DIY
You can play Wavelength at home four ways: buy the official board game, play a Wavelength-style dial on one phone, make your own dial from two paper plates and a brad fastener, or play the verbal version with no equipment at all. The board game is the best experience for regular game nights, the DIY board is free and takes about 15 minutes, and a phone version is the fastest way to start tonight. Below is how each one works, what it costs, and a free printable template.

| DIY paper version | Free | About 15 minutes | Trying it first, families who like crafts |

All four play the same way. If you have never played, here is the whole game in four steps:
How to play Wavelength in 4 steps
Wavelength is a guessing game for 2 or more players. One player knows where a hidden target sits between two opposites, gives a single clue, and the team tries to point the dial at exactly that spot.
-
1 Draw a card
Pick a card with two opposite ends, like Cold ↔ Hot.
-
2 See the target
Only the clue giver looks at where the hidden target sits on the dial.
-
3 Give a clue
They say one word or phrase that belongs at that spot, like “bath water”.
-
4 Turn the dial
The team moves the needle to where the clue belongs. The closer to the target, the more points.
1. Buy the official Wavelength board game
The original Wavelength was designed by Alex Hague, Justin Vickers and Wolfgang Warsch and is published by CMYK. The box has a big plastic dial with a sliding screen, a spinning target wheel and a deck of double-sided spectrum cards, so setup takes a minute and the reveal is the best part of the game.
Good to know before you buy:
- It plays from 2 players up to big groups, and shines with 4 to 10 in two teams.
- The dial is the real upgrade over DIY. Spinning the target and pulling the screen back is satisfying in a way paper isn’t.
- If you love it, there are expansion card packs from the same publisher.

Wavelength (CMYK)
- 2 to 12+ players, best in two teams
- Plastic dial with a sliding screen and spinning target
- Double-sided spectrum cards, scoring tokens and a rulebook
Also at Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble and most game shops.
2. Play Wavelength on your phone
If you’d rather not craft or buy anything, a phone can be the dial. It hides the target, lets the team drag the needle and keeps score for you, so you can start in seconds.
Same Wave in the Duoo app is our Wavelength-style game, made to be played on one phone passed around the room:
- 340+ spectrum cards in 9 categories: Everyday Life, Relationships, Pop Culture, Food & Drink, Hot Takes, Sports, Deep Thoughts, Physical Traits and Spicy (for adults).
- Works offline, for 2 to 8 players, with no accounts and no extra devices.
- 14 more party games in the same app, like Imposter, Would You Rather and Who’s Most Likely To, for when the group wants something else.
- Free to download. Everyday Life and Relationships are free; the other categories come with Duoo Premium.
Want to try it first? Play Same Wave free in your browser, no download needed.
There’s also the official Wavelength app by CMYK for iOS and Android. It’s free, with optional paid card packs.
3. Make a DIY Wavelength board
A homemade Wavelength board takes two paper plates, a marker and a brad fastener (the little split pins from an office drawer). It doesn’t look as nice as the real thing, but it plays exactly the same, and kids love building it.
Make a Wavelength board in 4 steps
-
1 Grab the materials
Two paper plates (or cereal-box cardboard), a marker, scissors and one brad fastener.
-
2 Draw the target
On one plate, draw a narrow wedge from the centre to the edge and split it into 2-3-4-3-2 point bands.
-
3 Cut the cover
Cut the second plate in half. It hides the top half of the target plate while the clue giver sets it.
-
4 Add the pointer
Cut a cardboard arrow and push the brad through arrow, cover and target plate so all three turn.
Here’s what a homemade board looks like when someone actually builds one:
Tips for a homemade board:
- Glue the plates to cereal-box cardboard first. Floppy plates are hard to turn.
- Keep the target narrow: about the width of two fingers at the edge. Too wide and every guess scores.
- Write spectrum cards on index cards or sticky notes. Our 200+ Wavelength categories will fill a whole deck.

This is the version that spread on TikTok: no dial, no cards, just numbers. It works anywhere, from a car to a restaurant table.
- The clue giver picks a spectrum out loud, like “1 is cold, 10 is hot”.
- They secretly pick a number from 1 to 10. A phone’s random number works well so they don’t always pick 7.
- They say one thing that fits that number. For a 7 on cold to hot: “bath water”.
- Everyone else agrees on a guess. Exact is 3 points, one off is 2, two off is 1.
- The next person becomes the clue giver.
It’s less precise than a dial, so arguments about whether a bath is a 6 or a 7 are part of the fun.
Which way should you pick?
- Playing tonight with what you have: Same Wave on a phone, or the verbal version.
- A rainy afternoon with kids: build the DIY board together, then play it.
- You’ve played a few times and want more: buy the board game. It’s one of the few party games that’s still fun after dozens of rounds.
Whichever you pick, the full Wavelength rules cover scoring, the catch-up rule and playing with two people.
Questions
Can you play Wavelength without the board game? +
Yes. Make a homemade dial from two paper plates and a brad fastener, play the verbal version where the target is a secret number from 1 to 10, or play a Wavelength-style dial game on a phone. All three use the same idea: one clue, and the team guesses where it sits between two opposites.
How do you make a Wavelength game at home? +
Draw a narrow target wedge with 2-3-4-3-2 point bands on one paper plate, cut a second plate in half as a cover, cut a cardboard arrow as the pointer, and join all three in the centre with a brad fastener. Our free printable template has every piece at the right size.
Is there a free Wavelength app? +
Yes. The publisher CMYK has an official Wavelength app for iOS and Android that is free with optional paid card packs. Duoo has a Wavelength-style game called Same Wave with 340+ spectrum cards in 9 categories, free to download on iPhone and playable free on this site.
Where can I buy the Wavelength board game? +
The official game by CMYK is sold on Amazon, at Target, Walmart and Barnes & Noble, and in most board game shops. Check the box for the Wavelength name and the CMYK or Palm Court logo.
How do you play Wavelength verbally? +
The clue giver secretly picks a number from 1 to 10 and a spectrum, like 1 = cold and 10 = hot, then names something that fits that number. Everyone else guesses the number. Score 3 for an exact guess, 2 if one off, 1 if two off.
