How Wavelength categories work

Each round uses one card with two opposite ends, for example Cheap – Boujee. The clue giver secretly sees a target somewhere on the scale between them and names one thing that belongs right there: “airport sushi” for a target just past the middle toward Boujee. The others turn the dial to where they think “airport sushi” sits. The categories below are written as left end – right end.

A good spectrum has a real middle. “Hot – Cold” is fine, but “Good movie – Bad movie” is better, because people disagree about the middle and that’s where the arguments start.

How to write your own Wavelength categories

  1. Pick two true opposites. “Good – Bad” plus a topic always works: good road trip snack, bad road trip snack.
  2. Keep each end short, one to four words, so it fits on a card and reads fast.
  3. Make sure the middle exists. If you can’t think of a clue for a target right in the center, change the spectrum.
  4. Mix objective and subjective cards. “Small – Big” is quick; “Underrated – Overrated” gets people arguing.
  5. Write a few just for your group: inside jokes, your town, your favorite show.

Tips for giving clues

  • Everyone in the room has to know your clue. An obscure band only you like is a wasted round.
  • For a target near the middle, go for something genuinely divisive rather than lukewarm.
  • Near the ends, pick an extreme the group will agree on, then nudge it a little: “a decent haircut” sits differently from “the best haircut of your life”.
  • Don’t explain your clue. One thing, said once, then let them argue.

Play without the board game

You don’t need a box to play. Draw a half circle on paper, have the clue giver mark the target secretly and fold the paper over, then let the group draw their guess. Or use the free Wavelength-style dial at the top of this page, which hides and reveals the target for you and keeps score. The full Same Wave game in the Duoo app has over 300 spectrum cards across nine categories and works offline on one phone.
